What is Digital Marketing: Introduction
As the word describes itself, digital marketing also known as online marketing means to promote or market your product and services digitally [online.] All marketing efforts that use the internet and electronic devices to reach and engage with potential customers comes under digital marketing.
Unlike traditional marketing methods, which often relies on ads in newspaper, billboards or broadcasts. Digital marketing involves using platforms such as search engines, social media, email and websites to promote products, services or brands to reach potential customers.
To explain you with an example, let’s say you’ve a small bakery and you want more people to know about your delicious cakes. So instead of putting up a poster or sign in your bakery’s window, you create a social media account of your business and start posting photos of your cakes, special offers and behind-the-scene shots of your baking process. This way, people who follow your page will see your posts and might come to your bakery.

Digital marketing helps you expose your brand beyond locally. Just like social media you can use different platforms such as email marketing, creating website, online ads and much more. By using these digital tools, you can reach more people, keep them updated, and if done right attract more customers.
Now that you know what is digital marketing, you might also ask why is it important. Let me try to explain you the importance of it, below. Here it goes:

Core Components of Digital Marketing
Digital marketing is a broad field with a lot of moving parts. Here, I’m only going to talk about core components that make up the world of digital marketing. Understanding these will provide you a solid foundation in its field, let’s explore the components of digital marketing:

1. Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
- Search engine optimization, short for SEO is all about making sure people can find your website when they search for something on any search engine related to your business, be it Google, Bing etc organically.
- SEO is an organic result seen on search result page. By optimizing the site’s content and structure of your website, you can increases the chance of it appearing higher in search result.
2. Content Marketing
- Creating valuable and relevant content that attracts and engages your target audience is called content marketing.
- Content marketing is designed to generate interest in your product or services by capturing people’s attention. Whether it’s blog posts, videos, infographics, your goal is to provide useful, entertaining, or informative content to your target audience.
- It also boosts awareness of your brand and build trust and recognition amongst your audience.
3. Social Media Marketing
- Social media marketing involves promoting your brand, products, or content through social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn etc.
- It’s an effective way to engage with your audience where they’re already spending time. It allows you and your audience to link, interact, share and exchange information easily.
4. Email Marketing
- Email marketing is one of the most effective ways to communicate with your audience directly. This is when you use emails to promote your brand to the target audience.
- They are generally in form of newsletters, promotional mails, personalized emails or feedback and survey mails etc.
- By sending these you can keep your audience infomed and engaged with your brand.
5. Pay-Per-Click (PPC) Advertising
- PPC is a form of online advertising where you pay each time someone clicks on your ad.
- Let’s take the example from above, you’ve run an ad for “choco lava cake” for your bakery, each time someone clicks on your ad you pay $1 each time.
- In simple term, you pay for visitors to increase your website traffic which subsequently helps in increasing rank of your site.
6. Affiliate Marketing
- Affiliate marketing is when you earn a commission by promoting someone else’s products or services.
- In affiliate marketing, you earn money when someone makes a purchase through your affiliate link.
7. Influencer Marketing
- Influencer marketing in digital marketing involves partnering with social media influencers or bloggers who have a loyal following.
- These influencers promote your brand or products to their audience in exchange of compensation or free products.
The above are some components that make digital marketing. Each elements plays a crucial role in shaping internet marketing efforts, so it’s important to take time to explore them and choose whatever fit for your overall plan. (I’ve introduced these briefly to you as I plan to dive deeper in a more detailed article in the near future. So stay tuned for updates.)
Challenges in Digital Marketing

Digital marketing may sound like an exciting world full of possibilities, but to be honest, like everything has two sides-good and bad, this one is also not without its challenges. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced individual, there are common hurdles to face. (don’t know about others but I’m surely facing challenges.)
Joking aside, knowing these challenges in advance will surely help you prepare and overcome them as you grow in your digital marketing journey. So let me introduce you to some challenges that you might face as digital marketer:
1. Keeping Up with Constantly Changing Changing Algorithms
- As you already know digital marketing is a dynamic field, meaning it’s one of the biggest challenges is to stay on top of constantly especially with changing algorithms.
- Whether it’s Google updating how it ranks websites or Instagram changing how it shows content in feeds, these algorithm changes can really affect your digital marketing strategies.
- Because of the changes in algorithms of platforms like Google, Facebook or Instagram etc, your website may drop in search ranking or your social media engagement might fall.
*How to Handle it [Tip]:
- The best way to deal with this is to stay informed (obvious, I know, but we often ignore obvious things, right?) Follow trusted blog, newsletters, or even industry podcasts that keep you updated on these changes.
- And remember, creating valuable and quality content will always be key-whether algorithm changes or not! (thank me later, just kidding)
2. Finding the Right Target Audience
- Finding the right target audience for your content is very crucial in internet marketing, if you don’t want your efforts to go waste. To give you an example, imagine yourself shouting is a crowded room full of people who aren’t slightly interested in what you’re saying. That’s what digital marketing would feel like if you’re not targeting the right audience.
- It’s little overwhelming to pinpoint exactly who your audience is, with so many people online. Getting your message in front of the people who actually are interested in your brand is important.
- However, casting your message too wide, without knowing your targeted audience can weaken your message and waste your valuable marketing efforts. That’ why finding the right target audience matters in this.
*How to Handle it [Tip]:
- If you don’t want your marketing efforts to go waste, take the time to create a detailed buyer persona. Like who are you trying to reach? What are their interests, challenges, and pain points?
- Once you know your ideal audience, tailor your content and ads to speak directly to them. Tools like Google Analytics and Facebook Insights can help you better understand your current audience and refine your targeting.
3. Standing Out in a Crowded Market
- Standing out digitally is really challenging, as it’s space packed with enough competitors already. Whether you’re running a blog, selling products, or offerings service, chances are there are many others doing something similar. (biggest challenge for me right now. But, don’t worry-I’ll overcome it. Wish me luck.)
- It’s truly difficult to make sure your message stands out and grab attention, with so much content out there-blogs, videos, social posts and whatnot.
*How to Handle it [Tip]:
- The key to handle this is, to focus on what makes you different. Meaning what’s your unique selling point [USP] that makes you different from others. (which I know is easier to say than being done.)
- It can be your tone, way of presenting information, or the unique value you offer. Don’t try to copy what everyone else is doing. Instead, find your selling point and create content that resonates with your specific audience.
- If you copy someone else you may find positive result in the beginning but for the long run it will impact your site negatively. (may be slowly but surely.) Being consistent and authentic can help you stand out in the long run.
4. Managing Multiple Channels
- When someone talk about optimizing site, content and anything else, it’s not limited to only working on SEO, paid ads, or social media. For effective digital marketing it’s crucial to work and manage multiple channels.
- Managing multiple channels like websites, social media, email marketing, SEO and paid ads, can feel overwhelming as each channel requires time, effort and a tailored approach.
- It’s easy to feel extreme when you’re trying to keep up with everything- posting on social media, optimizing your website for SEO etc, it all adds up and sometimes it feels like there aren’t just enough hours in the day.
*How to Handle it [Tip]:
- Focus on the platforms that matter most to you audience. (Example, if your most of the audience is active on Instagram, work there first.) You don’t need to be everywhere all at once.
- Start by mastering one or two channels, then expand when you’re ready. Use tools like social media schedulers or email automation platforms that can help you stay organised and save time. (they proves to be really helpful in organising your work.)
5. Measuring ROI (Return on Investment)
- This is more of a technical challenge as it’s difficult to figure out whether your efforts are paying off or not. With so many metrics to track- clicks, impressions, conversions etc, it’s easy to get lost in the data.
- It’s also difficult with metrics because not every metric tells the full story. As you might get tons of clicks, but are those clicks turning into sales or sign-ups? Measuring the real impact of your digital marketing efforts can be tricky, especially if you’re not sure which metrics to prioritize.
*How to Handle it [Tip]:
- First, define clear goals. What do you want to achieve? Is it more traffic, more leads, or increased sales? Then, focus on the metrics that align with those goals.
- Google Analytics, social media insights, and email marketing platforms all provide tools to track performance. Start simple, and don’t be afraid to adjust your strategy based on what’s working or not. (in a way, this makes digital marketing interesting too, isn’t it?)
6. Adapting to New Technologies
- As already said above and in my many other posts, digital marketing landscape is constantly evolving with new tools and technologies popping up all the time. From AI powered chatbots to voice search, keeping up with these innovations can be daunting.
- I said daunting because you can’t adopt every new technology or trend just because it’s popular within time, but you also don’t want to fall behind. It can feel confusing to balance the desire to stay current with the fear of being overwhelmed by all the possibilities.
*How to Handle it [Tip]:
- Prioritize learning about the tools and technologies that make sense for your business or brand. Remember, you don’t need to jump on every trend right away, but keep an eye on emerging tech, it can give you a competitive edge.
- When you do decide to try something new, start small and experiment before going all in. (don’t waste your resources and efforts for nothing.)
These were some challenges you might face as a digital marketer, especially as a beginner. Digital marketing may have its challenges, but I think that’s the part which makes it so exciting too. (I’ve also asked this question before so do tell your thoughts about it.) Whether it’s dealing with changing algorithms, managing multiple channels or finding target audience, the key is to stay flexible and keep learning.
In digital marketing you never stop learning, each time there’s something new to work with. Be persistent, creative and have a willingness to adapt, it will help you overcome these hurdles and succeed in the ever-evolving digital world.
